Hi
I have an Ericsson R320s and USB data connector which I am really interested to link in to Trixbox, along with a power cable to cover a tired battery. I am looking to run up Celliax on a separate pc to test on. Can anyone give me any guidance how to proceed? Will such an interface incorporate the audio, and as such function as a complete connector, as bluetooth seems to be able to manage, or will there also need to be an audio cable made along the lines detailed here and connected into a sound card. The phone side of the USB connector appears to simultaneously connect with both the the data and audio sockets. (At least it has the connectors on the phone side plug!) In advance many thanks!
Ciao, I googled for R320s
Ciao, I googled for R320s and I found some specs, then I looked at pinouts.ru and found the connector pins.
You can't use the R320s with the normal datacable you have, because the audio is in the same connector as the data. :-(
But you can modify the datacable, adding wires that goes to the soundcard.
Ask a friend that likes electronics and soldering to help you, show him the audiocable schema you can find in the "Support" section of this website and the R320s connector schema.
You can find the connector schema at:
http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/ericsson_218_318_337_388_pinout.shtml
When you have the audio-and-data cable, you will need to edit celliax.conf and set the serial speed to 9600.
Let us know if you try, and if you need more info.
Giovanni
Hey Giovanni, you are the
Hey Giovanni, you are the man!!! Thanks for that, I can solder, although its a challenge at these sizes!! From your link I think http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-P-W/erics_t28_pinout.shtml is the one.
Referring to http://www.celliax.org/howtobuildcelliaxadapter, I'd guess R320s Pin 8 is the audio common, Pin 2 is the mic input and Pin 1 is the speaker input. Does this seem correct? The USB connector I have connects USB Red to 2 (Audio from mobile/RTS), USB Green to 3 (CTS/Mobile Station On REQuest), USB White to 4 (Data to mobile (Rx)), USB Blue to 5 (Data from mobile (Tx)) and USB Black to 10 (DGND) Would that seem correct or should I dump the USB cable and connect up a serial one instead? (now that I have a plug for the phone.)
I tell you what I would
I tell you what I would try:
1) with the original non-modified datacable, try to see if the cellphone answers to the standard at commands (for eg. with minicom, 8-N-1 9600 settings). Try at least AT ATZ ATDT333444555 and such
2) if it do not answer, maybe the cell or the datacable are broken and it is better to stop here
3) if it do answer to the AT commands with minicom, try to use it with celliax (try to have it answer a call, and make a call), using the original non-modified datacable and a computer headset-microphone plugged into the soundcard
4) if *and only if* all the previous works, try to modify the cable, adding the wires for audio.
Pay attention to:
a) the USB cable you have is not a USB cable ;-). It is a USB to serial converter (you can probably see that if you plug the cable in the computer without connecting it to the cellphone, the computer will recognize a new serial port like ttyUSB0. You can see this by executing "dmesg" immediately after plugging the datacable). USB has only 2 signal wires plus 1 ground and 1 power lines. Your cable has probably at the connector all the serial-232 wires needed for a modem
b) in the pinout you rightly pointed me to, the pin 2 seems to be shared between the modem lines and the audio lines (it is not a problem if you use the datacable OR the handsfree headset). Maybe there will need some wizadry to make it works with BOTH the data and the audio in use.
c) I will try to have an handsfree for the cellphone, and see which pin it use, probably just the 1,2 and 8. But maybe also some trick on 6 and 7, to activate the external handsfree and disactivate the internal speaker and microphone inside the phone. The worst thing would be if when the phone activates the handsfree, it disactivates the data...
d) if you do not understand exactly how the handsfree works (point c) you cannot proceed
e) when you understood the point c you can try how to share the pin 2 between modem and audio (probably you can just solder one lead of a ceramic 1uF (one microfarad) to the pin, and the other lead of the capacitor to the wire coming from the soundcard. Do not use electrolytic capacitor, so you do not have to bother with positive-negative leads)
An alternative way, less "industrial grade", but very OK for a prototype and for hacking, would be to use the original and non-modified datacable and just to connect the audio wires coming from the soundcard to the microphone and speaker sockets inside the phone. If you pay enough attention, you will probably be able to open the phone and understand how to pull out the internal microphone and speaker, and to connect the wires coming from the soundcard to the microphone and speaker sockets in the phone.
Pay attention that the wires coming from the "MIC" jack of the soundcard have to be connected to the speaker in the phone, and the wires coming from the "HEADSET" jack in the soundcard have to be connected to the microphone in the cellphone.
You maybe need to put a 32 ohm (thirtytwo ohm) resistor between the speaker terminals in the phone (to give it its load), maybe it will work ok also without.
Don't worry about the bias voltage applied to the internal microphone, the soundcard will block it. If you don't know about the bias voltage, just don't worry about. ;-)
Please, let us (and me, I'm fond of those things) know your experiments, and feel free to ask for any info.
Happy hacking!
Giovanni
I believe you are correct
I believe you are correct the USB cable is more correctly a serial to USB convertor.
I have a ("sealed") aftermarket handsfree cable. On the external handsfree there is 32ohm (speaker) between pins 2 and 8 and 940ohm (microphone) between 1 and 8, and as one would expect there is 970ohm between 1 and 2.
There is a button on the handsfree which is used to answer and hang up calls.
There is also some fancy stuff that goes on as when it is plugged into the phone it automatically configures itself as being in Handsfree mode and vice versa when disconnecting. Do I need to do more checking to satisfy point d?
Incidentally the data cables can be cheaply sourced here, so if broken, it is replaceable. (About the only thing that is though!) The USB phone end clips apart, so it is easy to see / change if desired.
I have not yet done 1-4 as c may be more important?
I prefer to proceed along the "Industrial grade" path, if it helps reduce your typing!?
Again, much obliged to you Giovanni.
I also have an ericsson
I also have an ericsson deskstand which translates the phone connection through to the back of it (Type 402 0048-BV) so the single comprehensive USB plug will plug into the back of the deskstand, so it should support the phone and look the part!
I have just realised this may be relevant as when the phone is plugged into the deskstand it is detected as a "Home" connection, (as opposed to the "normal" connection) in the same way as the handsfree is. Somehow the deskstand must tell the phone what it is, as well as being connected. My original plan was to connect the USB cable to the back of the deskstand.
Looking in the phone menus it has selectable and editable profiles. One can edit Ring Volume, Increasing Ring, Vibrating Alert, Accept Calls (from all or nominated phone numbers - might be useful to limit access to the roaming and authorised phones), All Voice Calls, Light, Calling Cards, Profile Name, Auto Activation and Accessories (Car, Desk and Handsfree options). Seems I may be able to edit a profile (or create a new one) specifc to CellIAX deskstand functionality. (CellIAXDesk) Wow!
The USB plug is big, as if it has some electonics in it too. Plugged into Windows it tries to find new hardware "USB-UART Controller", without the phone attached.
Ciao R320s (do you have a
Ciao R320s (do you have a better name? ;-) )
Both the USB cable and the deskstand contains an USB to serial converter and a voltage level shifter, probably, plus the electronics that made the phone aware of being connected to them (some pullup or pulldown resistors between some phone pin).
I strongly suspect that there is some trickery made by the handsfree to have the phone "sense" that an handsfree is connected (again, some resistor, or maybe just the resistance you measured with the tester).
Try to see if the other pins of the handsfree are connected someway to ground or to some other pin (if you can buy cheaply another handsfree, "use the cutter, Luke").
Another thing to test can be: connect the datacable to the phone and the computer, use minicom to made a call ("ATDTnumber" or "ATDTnumber;" note the semicolon in the second command). Try to speak in the phone.
If this go ok, connect the handsfree wires to the datacable connector, and see if it still work. If this go ok, cut the handsfree before the switch and connect them to the jacks for the soundcard.
BUT!!!! I *very much strongly suspect* that the phone do not allows the audio to go to the handsfree if the datacable is working.
So, you would better try the "non-industrial" way, that is guaranteed to work (as long as you do not breaks the phone in trying it ;-) ).
Maybe you could proceed like this:
1) verify that the AT commands are working!!!! and that you can talk in the phone while a call is made (or received, is the same) via AT commands. ("ATDTnumber" or "ATDTnumber;" note the semicolon in the second command)
2) if this works, try to find a non-destructive way to connect the wires coming from soundcard to the mic and spk of the phone (scotch-tape, adhesive tape, 4 friends each one maintaining a wire into position, whatever ;-) )
3) maybe you will have to simulate the load of the speaker and the microphone to have it work, but I don't think so
4) if this works, solder them
If you use (and you would not like to have to solder the soundcard jacks too, better to have them presoldered in the factory) a ready made cable for the soundcard (I mean, a PC headset with the headset cutted away, or a extension-conversion cable you buy ready made and then you cut in half), pay attention that the internal wires are covered by an insulating enamel coating.
So, it will not work to try to use them on the spot (they are insulated). You have to burn the insulating coating away with having the end of the wire "roasting" into a bubble of melted soldering metal for some second. Then verify with a tester that you have continuity between the end of the wire and the part of the jack it is supposed to be connected, and that there is no short circuit with the other parts.
As for the deskstand: If it has an audio path that is working along the data (a speakerphone, an audio jack, etc), BINGO! But it seems that not. So it is of no use to us :-(.
Often the difference between "headset" and "car" is that in "car" the phone is charged by the carkit (and maybe some audio tuning for resilience to the noise and larsen of speakerphone in the car). The "desk" is probably like "data", but it gets charged. But those are just suppositions.
Please don't think of bothering by asking questions and discussing problems in the forums. This is exactly the purpose of the forums and the pleasure of the forums participants ;-)
Let us know!!!

Hi Giovanni, I am also known
Hi Giovanni, I am also known as Dave!
The deskstand reproduces the phone socket faithfully, in same form as the phone socket, hence the translation. Obviously the phone can discriminate what is connected. Also perhaps a small point the desktop stand has the pin 9 out, however the deskstand phone connection is missing the contact for this pin.(!) I am not sure if the flash connection is relevant for our purposes. The USB cable does however have this contact in place, but not connected, it could be if required.
I suspect the data must continue to work on the handsfree, because the button is used to hang up calls, if voice took over and cancelled data the user would not be able to hang up? Pin7 and Pin8 seem have no resistance, whereas the same pins on the deskstand are open.
I tested the deskstand with the handsfree plugged into the back. Initially it did not ring, it remained on the "Home" (deskstand) profile. I then changed the profile to handsfree (from the phones menu) and incoming calls reverted to the handsfree, and the button worked to accept the call. That is the handsfree mic and speaker worked as did the button. Seems important to have the right profile settings!
I have run up your CellIAX CD, looks nice, all be it a little slow using a Pentium 500 III! (1G RAM might help a little though?!)
I have connected up the USB drive and run dmesg, some extracts "USB Serial Support registered for ark3116" "ark3116 converter now attached to ttyUSB0" etc.
I tried using minicom on your CD however I cannot figure how to make a call. I found going Ctrl-A Z got me to the config, I configured the serial device to the above and set the bps etc to 9600 8N1. I configured the phone number in the Dialling Directory and tried to dial, it showed dialling, but no response from the phone. It notes attempts and counts down, but nothing else happens.
Interestingly the phone does not detect the deskstand until it has the power connected. I took the stand apart and it has quite a bit of circuit board, including two larger chips
1102-2C P3C
9CT
A785
and
ST62T28C6
M990B9940 (or M99089940?)
The stand has 3 LEDs on it for power etc, as well as a spare battery charging compartment, I imagine most of the circuitry is to run these.
How to get into the phone is not at all obvious, it will almost certainly never be the same(!) as there are no obvious screws anywhere, there must be some way to unclip the parts... I prefer to not kill it yet.
Please note I have edited messages a few times, so they may change before you reply...or do you prefer lots of small messages?

I do not think so, but I'm not sure. I think that the pin 2 can't be used at the same time to carry the voice signal voltage *AND* the Ready To Send signal voltage to the modem. It is probable that the "headset" and "datacable" mode of operation are mutually exclusive.
Normally the button has nothing to do with data... it do not transmit or receive data, it just make a quick short circuit, or breaks the continuity, or add a resistance, that is interpreted as "go hangup" command by the phone.
You have to test the phone answering AT commands, and the only option is to start with minicom or similar programs ;-)
So, from the linux command line become root ("su root" or "sudo su root"), then execute "minicom -s". On the menu, setup the serial port parameters (device /dev/ttyUSB0, speed 9600, 8 N 1). Then save it as dfl (so you do not have to repeat this procedure).
You can do the same with Hyperterminal in windows, I can't remember how.
Then you connect minicom or hyperterminal to the phone. (with minicom, you just re-execute it, after having previously saved the configuration as dfl. please be aware that if you use the livecd, after reboot you will have to reconfigure again the dfl, because all you made is cancelled at reboot, and you always start with a "pristine" livecd)
You then issue commands from the keyboards, and the phone is supposed to answer and act on them.
You type:
AT (and the phone is supposed to answer: "OK" without the quotation marks)
ATZ ("OK")
ATDT334455 (and the phone will call 334455)
ATDT334455; (alternative command with semicolon at end)
forget the dialing directory, it has nothing to do with us.
If you are unable to send AT commands to the phone with minicom or with hyperterminal, something is completely wrong.
If you do not feel too much at ease (or inclined to invest some amount of time to become a little bit at ease) with linux, AT commands, debugging, etc etc, maybe the least pain move is to find a second hand motorola c350 or c650 etc (probabably around 20-30USD on ebay) ;-)
If you need more info on how to use minicom, please ask

stop the presses!
I took a look at the supposed datacable schema:
http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhonesCables/ericsson_cable_pinout.shtml
It seems that it left completely untouched the pins 1, 2 and 8.
So you can have the datacable and the headset working together, probably! At least seems that the RTS pin is not used (is looped back to CTS - Clear to Send - at the cable internal electronic level)
You just have to understand how to make the phone "aware" that it has to send audio to the headset pins. And hope that doing so do not "disable" the data, or the data disable the headset...
Giovanni That is such a cool
Giovanni
That is such a cool site, it even has http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/ericsson_handsfree_pinout.shtml
which confirms my findings and more!
OK I got minicom to work, does the AT and dials a call from minicom. Well I thought it was, seems it now dials a number and the phone connects and starts timing the call as if the callee had answered, however the phone at the other end did not ring, and it reports "No Carrier". Perhaps that is to be expected at this level?
That bit of progress was encouraging!
Running Celliax: (I edit the file celliax.conf, changing device speed to 9600 and to ttyUSB0, that was all that seemed relevant?)
First off I got some sound card errors and it wouldn't finish starting, telling me to quit.
I changed the sound card from an old Creative 16 ISA to an Ensoniq PCI and there seemed to be no objection, instead it moved on to complain about chan_celliax.c:4627 serial write AT expect error sending data....with about 8 more error messages ending in Loading chan_celliax.so failed. Not sure how I capture this text to reproduce? How do I proceed from here?
Ciao Dave, try first to have
Ciao Dave,
try first to have a working phone call via minicom.
It seems that it try to make a data call. Because the remote is not a modem, it hangs with no carrier.
Have you tried the "ATDTnumber;" with the semicolon at the end?
Also, after sending the command "ATDT333444" or "ATDT333444;" you do not have to send nothing else, just waiting. If you send other commands it will hangup.
There can be many many different way to initiate a voice call, unfortunately. And maybe your model ask for a proprietary command.
If this do not works, try to find the manual for at commands for your model or series.
You have first to identify with minicom the at commands that are needed to make a working voice call.
Try googling for "at commands" ericsson or something similar, or check the developer part of the sony-ericsson site.
It seems to me that maybe I have something, I'll check monday...
Don't try to use asterisk right now, at this stage minicom is the right tool.
To capture the text, just select it from minicom or from the terminal and paste somewhere else.
Hello Again Giovanni, I
Hello Again Giovanni,
I think minicom is fixed now, it was a new SIM card and it needed some setup PIN, but they were slow to offer it.... Seems to work with fine with the ";". Without the semicolon the receiver rings and gets fax tones on answering. The caller display seems to need to be clear of digits also.
I believe the AT command reference for my phone is http://linuxbrit.co.uk/downloads/R320AT_R1A.pdf
It seems this was the first phone in their series to have IR functionality, apparently the commands are the same by cable and IR, which would make sense.
There seems to be no text capture command available in that window that I can find? There are no menus with a copy find nor does Ctrl+C or Shift+Ins work. What is the trick?
CellIAX runs in NO_SERIAL mode. If I shout into the microphone I get an introductory voice message that is too loud and distorted. Nothing seems to happen to the phone. Otherwise it is as noted above.
In linux, you just highlight
In linux, you just highlight with the right mouse button the part you want to copy (no need for ctrl-c), then you use the middle mouse button to paste it where you want (no need for ctrl-v). If you have a two-button mouse, the middle mouse button is emulated by pressing the left and right buttons at the same moment.
If celliax run in NO_SERIAL mode, it do not use the serial port ;-)
You have to edit the celliax.conf file and change "no_serial" to "at", so it will use the serial connection sending and receiving AT commands.
The celliax.conf file is in /usr/local/asterisk/etc/asterisk/celliax.conf in the livecd and in /etc/asterisk/celliax.conf in trixbox

edit logger.conf to enable debugging in console
edit celliax.conf to enable debug_at
start asterisk as: asterisk -cdddddddddddd (c followed by many d)
The problem is that celliax do not successfully interact with the serial port (/dev/ttyUSB0 in this case).
Do you have minicom working at the same time? If so, you better close minicom.
Please, post the debugging results
Also, please post the part of celliax.conf with the ttyUSB0 and 9600 in it

I see that you are using the livecd.
Unfortunately the livecd will probably not work with your phone.... (the way to interact with the serial port has changed since the livecd was out, now is better with slow phones).
If you have more than 256MB of ram on the computer that is running the livecd, you can do this:
1) open a terminal
2) type "sudo su"
3) type "svn checkout http://www.celliax.org:8081/svn/celliax/trunk celliax"
4) type "cd celliax/asterisk-1.2.XX"
5) type "make install"
6) DON'T TYPE "make samples"
7) proceed as per the previous posting (edit logger.conf and celliax.conf, etc)
REMEMBER: each time you reboot, you have to start from point 1 (so, don't reboot ;-) )

Yes I was going to ask how to transfer to a HDD or CF card? (I can run either here) PC now has 2G RAM. I have changed to a faster AMD 2400 as Intel 500!!! is too slow for testing etc, although should be fine for final machine...
What directory is the asterisk command run from?
Perhaps it might be easiest to install a test version of Trixbox (2.2.4) on a HDD , download Celliax and continue work on that platform, presumably using your immediately previous upgrade instructions?
Not sure the distinction you make in slow phones vs faster phones?! 3G? Data transfer rates? The CD I am using is the latest 0.46.
From your responses Giovanni, it seems you are enthusiastic to keep working on this, I hope its not a bother to you, certainly it will give others a trail to work through and I feel confident we will succeed as you give good timely responses!
Once we have it working I plan to run celliax as a second Trixbox and trunk into the main one. Once it seems stable I will look to integrate.

the livecd is just a demo, it is not supposed to be installed on hard disk
the command is /usr/local/asterisk/usr/sbin/asterisk -cddddddd
if you follow the trixbox how-to (in home page) you will end up with the latest sources.
I was talking about phones that connect to the serial port at a slow speed (9600 in your case)
I'm trying to help you and the community, but it is the most difficult thing to make a new phone model to work, especially one that has not separate audio and data connectors
and yes, I like those things ;-)

Looking forward to your advice!
By the way I am hopeful to have the power, data and sound all connect through the same plug to the phone, should I come to do the reconfig of the cable! Of course for this phone model it seems the only possible way to do it!

Ciao Dave,
the instructions are for Trixbox 2.2.3 (I added your useful comments to the instructions). 2.2.4 is out since august 8 ;-). From what you say, seems that they have changed the file structure. If you use 2.2.4 you have to adapt the instructions.
I would counseil you to use 2.2.3 for now.

Hi Giovanni
I also have 2.0, 2.2 and 2.2.3-1 here, happy to run one of them up, however won't the initial update bring it back up to 2.2.4?
Quote: [root@asterisk1 ~]# yum -y update
This command will update the entire Operating System and Trixbox installation?
I recall my main trixbox update has gone upto 2.2.3 without using the 2.2.3 iso.
I suppose I could skip the # yum -y update step.

I don't think it will bring trixbox to 2.2.4, but maybe it do.
So, to be on the safe side, you can skip that step.
Hi Giovanni 2.2.3-1 installs
Hi Giovanni
2.2.3-1 installs fine as per the instructions. (It made me wonder if it would be worth updating the instructions to 2.2.4 as I understand this is the last version of the 2.2.x series, but I am sure that needs to be for another day, however I am not sure if other people can now source 2.2.3-1, it was just lucky I had downloaded it!)
control_device_name=/dev/ttyUSB0 was already correctly specified, perhaps some smarts picked this up?
Here is the data requested.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
