LOL, I still don't quite understand how Celliax works!

My wife and I need new cell phones, and I was thinking about the Blackberry 8820 with WiFi and UMA/GAN, which allows you to make phone calls over WiFi networks which we would mostly use on our home WiFi. Celliax seems to accomplish the same goal, namely being able to make calls at home from our cell phones without using the expensive cell network, but after browsing the site for an hour or so I still can't make head or tail of a few details, namely:

1. If I set up Celliax with a GSM adapter and I want to use my GSM cell phone (phone number 123-4567) to connect to the adapter instead of the cell network, is there some configuration I need to change on the cell phone, or will it lock on to the adapter automatically when it's in range?

2. When I dial out from my cell phone, what number do I call, the number I want to reach or the number of the base unit (and then maybe redial the number I'm trying to reach)? What phone number does the receiving party see when they accept the call from my cell phone routed through the Celliax adapter and then Vonage? Do they 123-4567 or some Vonage number?

3. Can you somehow accept incoming cell calls from the adapter instead of the cellular network? If so, what number do they call? Do they dial 123-4567, or do I need to make a permanent mapping from a Vonage number to a cell number in Asterix/Celliax?

4. What other cell phone services can I use over Celliax? e.g. can I fire up my cell phone web browser and have it go over Celliax as well, or is that going to be blocked since it's not a "phone call" application?

Any answers or any other info would be most appreciated, thanks much!

How CellIAX works!

Consider:
Internet (and whatever) <--> Trixbox / CellIAX <-> CellIAX Local CellPhone <.....GSM.....> Personal Roaming CellPhone
1) It uses the cellular network to connect the Local and Roaming phones, no matter how close or distant, so long as there is coverage. Not sure about Wifi, perhaps you can test and advise, this is an evolving piece of software depending on user input. If the two phones can call each other over WiFi then it must be possible, however the necessary embedded commands may not yet be present and is almost certainly going to depend on the phone brands and model numbers.
2) Depends how it is set up! You need to initially dial the local cell phone number. Call backs with dial tone should work, although I have yet to fully confirm this. I am not sure if one can make an automated one step number that calls the local phone, and then also transfers to the intended number. Other variations that might be possible include calling the Local phone from the Roamer and hanging up before the local answers, to then get a call back dial tone, the roamers caller ID enabling this functionality. One then dials the intended number. Again I am hoping shortcuts will work, subject to confirmation! I am hoping we can but await confirmation from others how this might be done. There seem two issues here, one is the dial string and the second is how one might integrate this into an existing cell phone book, to make this seamless from a cell phone, e.g. when driving or using voicedial! Re caller ID what do you want them to see?
3) Local phone can call Roaming phone like any other number. Up to you how you set them up.
4) So far as I know data is yet to be configured to be conveyed between the two phones, it would be wonderful if it becomes enabled. I think video calling between the two phones may work now between two compatible video callers.
Note for some people and appropriate call plans WiFi can be largely irrelevant.
I hope this helps. (And is accurate Giovanni et al, please feel free to correct / add to)

celliax and wifi

I just add this to the R320 comment, that is right on point

chan_celliax is software that runs on the server, part of Asterisk, and receives input from a cellphone.

If there is a way to call phone-phone through wifi, and those internal AT commands are documented, that can be added to celliax.

Other thing is bluetooth, that maybe will be added to celliax in the future

Ciao for now,

Giovanni
